Summary of FBI Public Service Announcement

The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has seen an increase in complaints related to COVID-19 scams. The concern is for those individuals that are now working remotely to be aware of the increase of scams and to think twice before agreeing to or clicking on unsolicited offers.

Vulnerabilities that can affect us all.

Malicious cyber actors may use legitimate-looking telework software—which may be offered for free or at a reduced price—to gain access to sensitive data or eavesdrop on conversations. Cyber actors have also used video-teleconferencing (VTC) hijacking to disrupt online conferences.

Be aware of what your child is doing on line because they may not always recognize the dangers of visiting unknown websites or communicating with strangers online.

Tips to protect you and your family.

  • Do not open attachments or click links within emails from senders you do not recognize.
  • Closely monitor children's use of edtech and online services. If you have questions please contact your child’s teacher.
  • Keep your and your child’s safety in mind when online. Avoid using full names, photos, and birthdays when posting or creating accounts online.
  • Do not provide your or your child’s personal information to any unsolicited email or phone call.
  • When using your personal device make sure you have anti-virus software installed and routine security updates are applied.
