Memorial Day was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, as proclaimed by General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic. Now it is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
